Insomnia During Pregnancy: How To Get A Good Nights Sleep

Insomnia during pregnancy doesn’t pose a serious threat to you or your baby. It may be caused by many factors such as anxiety due to your upcoming birth or more physical reasons such as back aches and heartburn. Even your inability to control your bladder due to the pressure exerted on them by the baby can cause insomnia due to the frequent trips to the bathroom. Even the hormonal changes that are rapidly progressing through your body as it prepares for the delivery of your baby can cause you a lot of sleepless nights that are un-restful due to the combination of all the above reasons.

For backaches one can remedy the problem by eliminating the pressure exerted on your spine by the baby by lying on your side propping up your abdomen with a pillow for the necessary support. Heartburn is avoidable by propping up your upper torso with pillows alleviating most of the pressure on the stomach which causes the backflow of digestive juices to your esophagus. Heartburn is also caused by pregnancy hormones that tend to relax the muscles of the said organ limiting the otherwise perfect seal separating the esophagus from the stomach.

Before bedtime, one can opt for a nice warm bath that calms the mind and body and add to it a relaxing massage can give you a good night’s sleep that you have been wanting for sometime. A glass of milk or snack rich in carbohydrates can stimulate the body to release hormones that are relaxing and can induce sleep in no time. Some stores that sell baby stuff also sell audio cd’s that contain soothing music intended for babies but can be equally effective for mom too. Sounds of calm ocean waves splashing on the surf, a gentle breeze going through a stand of bamboo and many more can calm you enough to relax you getting you to sleep in no time.

If you do get to sleep at night but do not feel at all refreshed, any opportunity during the day that permits sleep is a good opportunity to catch up on those ZZZ’s. Sleep is not only essential but highly beneficial for you and your baby. Even when you without pregnancy, the lack of a good night’s sleep can give you an irritable feeling you couldn’t explain. These suggestions may or may no work for you so do ask your birthing class instructor or doctor on some tips that might get you back the restful sleep you and your baby need to stay healthy and strong. A good night’s sleep prepares you for another day that is sure to raise more anxiety and fears due to your upcoming baby so relax as much as you can and try to get as much sleep during the day to cover those long sleepless nights and you’ll feel fresh ready again to face the world renewed.
