DNA Paternity Test
|DNA Paternity Testing is done or performed for the purpose of establishing conclusive biological relation between an alleged father and a child. |
The most common material used for testing and comparing DNA are buccal swabs. Between the two, the easiest and painless is the latter. In spite of the great ease of obtaining the required DNA samples, the test results are as conclusive and irrefutable as those that have used other DNA sources but not admissible in court because a legal paternity test typically requires the presence of all parties to be tested in a designated certified facility where they are required to present government issued identification.
|The buccal swab test is regularly performed by certified forensic laboratories in determining paternity. A legal paternity test typically requires the presence of all parties to be tested in a designated certified facility where they are all required to present government issued identification. Participants are also asked to complete client identification and consent forms. Forms for minors are signed by their legal guardians. The specimen collector will also take photographs and fingerprints of all persons to be tested.|
Buccal swab collection is absolutely painless and does not present any further inconvenience to the test participants except for the need to show-up. Using a cotton-tipped swab, loose cheek cells are obtained by rubbing the swab against the inside of the cheek. This will be done to all participants. After which, swabs containing the DNA specimens are placed in individual tamper-proof packages and sealed, before they are sent to the laboratory. The package seal should remain intact upon reaching the laboratory.
Laboratory personnel extract the DNA from the buccal swabs which undergoes the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) process. This process tests for at least sixteen (16) loci. A DNA profile is then created using the results of the test to produce a genetic fingerprint of each participant. The DNA profiles of the child and the alleged father are compared to come up with exclusion equivalent to 0% probability or an inclusion which represents at least 99.99% probability that the alleged father is the biological father.
